(Understanding the User's Perspective)

Context Setting

(Understanding the User's Perspective)

Tell me about a time you looked at a problem from the user's perspective.
During a campus service project, my team was trying to improve an online reservation system for student facilities.
How did the user's perspective change your approach?
[Situation] Students frequently asked questions about how to reserve study rooms, so our team initially assumed that the website didn't provide enough information.
[Task] We planned to add more instructions, but I wanted to understand exactly where students were getting confused before making changes.
[Action] I observed a few students using the reservation page and asked them to talk me through what they were doing. I realized that the problem wasn't a lack of information. The reservation process had too many steps, and the button for confirming a booking was difficult to find.
[Result] We recommended simplifying the process and making the confirmation button more visible. After testing the revised version with students, they completed reservations with fewer questions and less hesitation.
What would have happened if you had followed your original assumption?

We probably would have added even more information, which might have made the page more complicated. Observing the users helped us solve the actual problem instead of the problem we assumed they had.

What did you learn from that experience?

I learned that something can seem simple when you're familiar with it but confusing to someone using it for the first time. That's why I try to understand the experience from the user's point of view before suggesting a solution.

 Easy
How do you understand what a user needs?
Why is the user's perspective important?
 Medium
Tell me about a time user feedback changed your approach.
How do you avoid making assumptions about users?
 Advanced
How do you distinguish between what users say they want and what they actually need?

 Easy
I try to observe what users actually do and ask questions about where they experience difficulty.
Because what seems easy or logical to us may not feel the same way to someone using a product or service for the first time.
 Medium
My team initially planned to add more instructions to an online service. After observing users, we realized that simplifying the process would be more helpful than adding information.
I try to validate my assumptions through observation, feedback, or simple user testing before deciding on a solution.
 Advanced
I listen to what users say, but I also look at their behavior and where they experience difficulty. Combining feedback with observation often reveals the underlying need more clearly.
