(Making a Data-Informed Decision)

Context Setting

(Making a Data-Informed Decision)

Tell me about a time you used data to make a decision.
During a student program, my team noticed that attendance was gradually decreasing, so I suggested looking at the participation data before changing the program.
What did the data tell you?
[Situation] Our department was running a weekly career workshop, but attendance had dropped for three consecutive weeks.
[Task] My team needed to decide whether to change the content, promotion, or schedule.
[Action] I compared attendance by session time, topic, and registration source. The clearest pattern was that workshops held later in the evening had much lower attendance, regardless of the topic.
[Result] We moved the next sessions to an earlier time, and average attendance increased by about 30 percent over the following three workshops.
Were you surprised by what the data showed?

Yes. We initially assumed the topics weren't interesting enough, but the data suggested that timing was the bigger issue. It helped us avoid changing something that wasn't actually the problem.
What did you learn from that experience?
I learned that data can challenge assumptions. I still think context and judgment matter, but evidence gives you a much stronger basis for making a decision.

 Easy
Do you use data when making decisions?
What kind of information do you look at before making a decision?
 Medium
Tell me about a time data changed your original opinion.
How do you decide which data is relevant
 Advanced
How do you balance data with professional judgment?
 Easy
Yes. When data is available, I use it to check whether my assumptions are supported by evidence.
I focus on information that is directly related to the question I'm trying to answer rather than looking at every available number.
 Medium
My team once thought low attendance was caused by the program content, but participation data showed that session timing was the stronger factor.
I start with the decision I need to make and identify which variables could realistically affect that outcome.
 Advanced
I use data to identify patterns and test assumptions, but I also consider context that may not be fully captured in the numbers. The strongest decisions usually combine both.
"be supported by data"
  • 👉 be supported by data = 데이터에 의해 뒷받침되다.
I wanted to make sure our assumption was supported by data."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  •  Don't : I felt that the schedule was the problem.
  •  Better : I analyzed the participation data to see whether our assumption was supported by evidence.
"identify a pattern"
I identified a clear pattern in attendance by session time."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  •  Don't : I looked at a lot of numbers.
  •  Better : I compared the data and identified a clear pattern in attendance.
"challenge an assumption"
The data challenged our assumption that the content was the problem."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  •  Don't : We realized our first idea was wrong.
  •  Better : The data challenged our original assumption and pointed us toward a different explanation.
(Sports Management)
  • "During a campus sports event, I compared ticket sales by promotion channel and found that most registrations came through student community posts rather than printed flyers. We shifted more of our promotion online for the next event."
(Health Administration)
  • "During a class project, I analyzed appointment data from a sample clinic and found that missed appointments were concentrated at certain times of day. Our team used that pattern to suggest a different reminder schedule."
(Agricultural Economics)
  • "During a market project, I compared sales data across several product categories and found that demand changed significantly by season. We used that information to recommend adjusting inventory levels throughout the year."
