(Working with Diverse People)

Context Setting

(Working with Diverse People)

Tell me about a time you worked with people from different backgrounds.
I worked on a product development project with students from business, design, and engineering.
Did your different backgrounds ever make collaboration difficult?
[Situation] Our team was developing a reusable food container for a university innovation project. Because we came from different majors, we tended to focus on different priorities.
[Task] We needed to agree on a concept that was practical, appealing to users, and financially realistic.
[Action] Instead of trying to make everyone approach the problem the same way, I suggested that we identify what each person could contribute. The engineering student focused on functionality, the design student on user experience, and I looked at customer needs and cost.
[Result] By combining those perspectives, we developed a more balanced proposal and received strong feedback from the judges for both its practicality and market potential.
How did you handle situations when your perspectives conflicted?

I tried to bring the discussion back to our shared goal. Instead of asking whose idea was right, we asked which combination of ideas would best meet the needs of the project.
What did you learn from working with such a diverse team?
I learned that different perspectives can make collaboration more challenging at first, but they can also lead to stronger solutions if everyone understands what each person brings to the table.

 Easy
Do you enjoy working with people who are different from you?
What do you learn from working with different people?
 Medium
How do you work effectively with people who have different working styles?
Tell me about a time different perspectives improved a project.
 Advanced
How do you make sure diverse perspectives actually improve a team's decision rather than create conflict?
 Easy
Yes. I think working with people who have different experiences and perspectives helps me see problems in ways I might not consider on my own.
I learn different ways of approaching problems and communicating ideas. It also helps me become more flexible in how I work with others.
 Medium
I try to understand how each person prefers to work and then agree on a process that allows everyone to contribute effectively.
In a multidisciplinary project, our different majors led us to focus on different aspects of the product. Combining those perspectives helped us create a more balanced solution.
 Advanced
I think the team needs a clear shared goal. Once everyone agrees on what we're trying to achieve, different perspectives can be evaluated based on how they contribute to that goal rather than on personal preference.
"bring a different perspective"
  • 👉 bring a different perspective = 다른 관점을 제시하다.
Each team member brought a different perspective to the project."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  •  Don't : Everyone on my team was very different.
  •  Better : Each team member brought a different perspective, which helped us look at the problem from multiple angles.
"find common ground"
When our opinions differed, I tried to find common ground."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  •  Don't : I tried to convince everyone to agree with me.
  •  Better : I focused on finding common ground and bringing the discussion back to our shared goal.
"play to someone's strengths"
  • 👉 play to someone's strengths = ~의 강점을 최대한 활용하다.
We divided the work in a way that played to each person's strengths."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  •  Don't : We divided the work equally.
  •  Better : We divided the responsibilities in a way that played to each person's strengths.
(Landscape Architecture)
  • "During a community design project, I worked with students from landscape architecture, environmental science, and sociology. Each group looked at the space differently, so we combined environmental data, design ideas, and residents' needs in our final proposal."
(Educational Technology)
  • "I worked on a learning-content project with students who had backgrounds in education, technology, and visual design. We used each person's expertise to make the content educationally effective, technically practical, and easy to use."
(Food Science & Technology)
  • "During a product-development project, I worked with teammates who focused on nutrition, production, and marketing. Listening to those different perspectives helped us develop a product that was both feasible to produce and attractive to consumers."
