(Demonstrating Active Listening)

Context Setting

(Demonstrating Active Listening)

Tell me about a time when active listening helped you solve a problem.
During a research project, one of my teammates seemed frustrated with how we were dividing the work.
How did you handle the situation?
[Situation] My team was conducting a survey project, and one teammate mentioned several times that the workload didn't feel balanced.
[Task] I wanted to understand the issue before suggesting a solution because I wasn't sure whether the problem was the amount of work or something else.
[Action] I asked a few follow-up questions and listened without interrupting. I then summarized what I had heard to make sure I understood correctly. I realized that the main concern wasn't the amount of work but that responsibilities kept changing without being clearly communicated.
[Result] We created a shared task list with clear responsibilities, and communication within the team became much smoother for the rest of the project.
Why didn't you just respond to the workload issue directly?

I didn't want to assume I understood the problem based on one comment. Asking questions helped me understand what was actually causing the frustration.

What did you learn from that experience?

I learned that listening well means more than staying quiet while someone speaks. You need to understand what they really mean and make sure your response addresses the actual concern.

 Easy
What makes someone a good listener?
How do you make sure you understand someone correctly?
 Medium
Tell me about a time listening changed your understanding of a situation.
How do you handle a conversation when someone disagrees with you?
 Advanced
How do you listen effectively when someone isn't expressing their concern clearly?
 Easy
A good listener pays attention, doesn't interrupt, and asks questions when something isn't clear.
I summarize what I've heard and ask whether I've understood their point correctly.
 Medium
During a team project, I initially thought a teammate was concerned about having too much work. After listening more carefully, I realized the real issue was unclear responsibilities.
I try to understand their reasoning before defending my own position. I ask questions and make sure I understand their concern first.
 Advanced
I ask open-ended follow-up questions and pay attention to the points they repeat or emphasize. Then I summarize my understanding and give them a chance to correct it.
"ask follow-up questions"
I asked a few follow-up questions to understand what was really bothering her."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  • Don't : I listened to what she said.
  • Better : I asked follow-up questions to understand what was behind her concern.
  • ➡ Active listening
"make sure I understand correctly"
I summarized what I'd heard to make sure I understood correctly. "
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  • Don't : I knew what she meant.
  • Better : I summarized what I'd heard and made sure I understand her concern correctly.
"see something from someone's perspective"
  • 👉see something from someone's perspective
I tried to see the situation from my teammate's perspective."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  • Don't : I explained why our system was fair.
  • Better : I first tried to see the situation from my teammate's perspective before suggesting a solution.
