(Making Decisions with Limited Information)

Tell me about a time you had to make a decision with limited information.
During a data analysis project, my team had to choose an approach before we had received all of the data we expected.
How did you make the decision?
[Situation] My team was analyzing customer behavior for a class project, but part of the survey data was delayed.
[Task] We still needed to decide which variables to focus on so we could begin the analysis on time.
[Action] I reviewed the data we already had, identified the strongest patterns, and suggested starting with those variables while clearly noting our assumptions.
[Result] We were able to begin the analysis without delaying the project, and when the remaining data arrived, our initial approach still held up with only minor adjustments.
Weren't you worried about making the wrong decision?

Yes, so I tried to separate what we knew from what we were assuming. That helped us manage the risk instead of pretending we had complete information.

What did you learn from that experience?

I learned that sometimes waiting for perfect information can create another kind of risk. The key is to make the best decision you can with the evidence available and stay ready to adjust.

 Easy
What do you do when you don't have all the information you need?
Are you comfortable making decisions under uncertainty?
 Medium
How do you avoid making assumptions when information is incomplete?
How do you manage risk when making a decision with limited data?
 Advanced
When is it better to make a decision rather than wait for more information?
 Easy
I identify what information is available and what is still uncertain. Then I decide whether I have enough to move forward.
Yes, as long as I understand the risks and have a reasonable basis for the decision.
 Medium
I can't always avoid assumptions, but I make them explicit and check whether they are supported by the information available.
I consider what could go wrong, choose an option that can be adjusted if necessary, and monitor for new information.
 Advanced
I think it's better to decide when the cost of waiting becomes greater than the risk of acting. In that case, I use the best available evidence and keep the decision flexible.
"work with the information available"
  • 👉work with the information available = 현재 이용 가능한 정보를 바탕으로 판단하다.
We had to work with the information available."
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  • Don't: We didn't have enough information, so I guessed.
  • Better: We worked with the information available and made our assumptions explicit.
"distinguish A from B"
  • 👉distinguish A from B = A 와 B 를 구분하다.
I tried to distinguish what we knew from what we were assuming. "
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  • Don't: I thought the missing data would probably be similar.
  • Better: I distinguished what we knew from what we were assuming before making the decision.
"stay ready to adjust"
We made a decision but stayed ready to adjust when new information came in. "
  • enlightenedInterview Strategy
  • Don't: Once I decide, I stick to it.
  • Better: I make the best decision I can and stay ready to adjust when new information becomes available.

  • "During a water-quality project, some field measurements were delayed, but our team still needed to choose where to conduct additional testing. We used the available results and selected locations with the highest apparent risk."
